Skin Issues for CKD Stage 4

Skin Issues for CKD Stage 4In Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease, kidneys have a severe damage with 15%~29% kidney function. Because kidneys are unable to filter blood correctly, some unpleasant skin issues may appear in CKD Stage 4.

Itchy skin

Skin itching is commonly attributed to deposits of phosphorus and large molecular waste products. Normally, kidneys can eliminate extra phosphorus and waste products efficiently. When kidney function declines severely, phosphorus and waste chemicals can cause skin itching easily.

Dry skin

Kidneys have a close link with many organs and systems. As kidneys fail to work, some abnormal changes will occur in the sweat glands and oil glands, resulting in dry skin. If patients with stage 4 kidney disease ignore this skin problem, they may find they are at the high risk of infections and slow healing of skin wounds.

Skin color changes

A lot of patients with advanced kidney disease notice their skin becomes yellow, brown or even black. This torments kidney patients a lot, and this problem is mainly caused by the buildup of one pigment called urochrome in the skin. Generally, this pigment is excreted by healthy kidneys.

Although patients with Stage 4 CKD may have the above skin issues, these problems in stage 4 kidney disease patients are still not as common as that in patients with Stage 5 CKD. Besides, it is possible to relieve these skin issues without dialysis and kidney transplant. For example, if patients have skin itching, they can control their phosphorus intake tightly and use some phosphate binder to reduce blood phosphorus level and alleviate skin itching.
