Can You Have Dialysis in Stage 3 CKD

Can You Have Dialysis in Stage 3 CKDStage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease is the moderate stage of kidney disease. In this condition, most patients begin to suffer from some symptoms and complications. Should they have dialysis in Stage 3 CKD?

Generally, our kidneys can still work by themselves, if their kidney function is higher than 15%. Of course, with the decline of kidney function level, it is inevitable to experience more and more complications such as high blood pressure, proteinuria, hematuria, fatigue and so on. Fortunately, nearly all of them won't threaten patients' life with prompt managements.

Dialysis, also called artificial kidney, is used to replace impaired kidneys to cleanse their blood, filter extra fluid and small molecular waste products, and regulate blood pressure. Thereby, it is also honored as a lifesaving therapy for kidney failure patients.

In Stage 3, kidneys are functioning at 30%~59%. In this case, although kidneys can't filter blood perfectly, they are able to maintain patients' basic life. So, most patients don't need to begin dialysis. However, this doesn't mean all patients with stage 3 kidney disease can't accept dialysis.

In addition to kidney function level, many other factors also determine the beginning time of dialysis. For example:

- Dangerous high potassium level that can't be controlled by medications

- Oliguria, anuria or severe swelling

- Chronic kidney failure along with acute heart failure, pulmonary edema and cerebral edema

- High blood pressure that can't be lowered by medicines

- Metabolic acidosis that can't be normalized by drugs

- Bract concurrent heart inflammation, gastrointestinal bleeding and central nervous system symptoms

If patients with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease have one of the above problems, they may be suggested to begin dialysis. When their dangerous symptoms and complications are under control, they can get rid of dialysis. Then, they should take some therapies that can reverse their renal damage.
