Can Stage 3B Chronic Kidney Disease Cause Leg Pain

Can Stage 3B Chronic Kidney Disease Cause Leg PainPeople with Stage 3B Chronic Kidney Disease may have uncomfortable sensation in their legs such as “itchy” and “pins and needles” feelings. Among them, leg pain may also affect these patients’ life quality, even though this symptom is not life-threatening.

What is Stage 3B Chronic Kidney Disease?

Stage 3b kidney disease means kidneys are working at 30%~44%, so they are unable to filter blood and maintain the internal environment effectively. Then, a series of problems begin to appear including fatigue, high blood pressure, muscle cramps, decline of urine output, proteinuria, and so on. If uncontrolled effectively, stage 3b kidney disease will aggravate into stage 4 or end stage.

How does stage 3b kidney disease cause leg pain?

In some cases, kidney patients’ leg pain is attributed to restless leg syndrome (RLS), which occurs commonly in kidney patients and may make patients difficult to keep sleeping at night. Generally, when kidneys are unable to play their function, extra metabolic waste products will build up in the tissues and blood flow declines within kidneys, resulting in the anoxia and ischemia condition. Finally, this condition induces RLS easily, while leg pain is just one sign of restless leg syndrome.

Additionally, leg pain may be caused by swelling. In most cases, swelling is painless, but if it is too severe, it may cause painful sensation. For patients with stage 3b chronic kidney disease, swelling is more likely to be due to fluid retention or heavy protein leakage.

From the above analysis, we can know leg pain can indeed be one problem caused by stage 3 chronic kidney disease.

How to manage leg pain for these kidney patients?

The direct treatment should be able to manage the anoxia and ischemia condition or ease patients’ swelling. Here, we have many methods to ease kidney patients’ leg pain and improve kidney function. To learn more about these methods, you can email to or leave a message below.
