Why you experience muscle cramps with kidney failure?

Many kidney failure complications should be responsible for the muscle cramps.

Imbalanced electrolytes

Kidneys not only work to remove the excessive fluids and waste products, it also helps balance the electrolytes in the blood. When your kidneys are failed, they lose their functions, causing imbalanced electrolytes.

Muscle tissue relies, in part, on a range of minerals, electrolytes and other chemicals in order to contract and relax. As a result, the failed kidneys may cause muscle cramps.


It is also a common complication in chronic kidney failure cases. It is related to the high blood pressure. Kidneys helps regulate the blood pressure and keep it stable by releasing a material called renin. In Kidney Failure stage, the blood pressure will be increased, causing atherosclerosis. This is another reason why you experience muscle cramps.


When kidneys cannot work well, it may cause a common symptom named swelling. In order to alleviate this symptoms, diuretics are used. However, these drugs can interfere with the body’s mineral balance and contribute to cramping
