Kidney failure and itching

Kidneys are important organs to remove the excessive water and waste products in the body and they also help regulate the electrolytes levels. When kidneys cannot work well, the waste products or excessive electrolyte will build up in the blood. Itching skin is induced by the deposition of phosphate and uremic toxins.

But don’t worry, there are many ways which can help alleviate the itching symptom in people with Kidney Failure.

How to deal with the itching in kidney failure patients?

There are some suggestions are helpful, as follows:

- Chickweed is a fabulous plant, and is probably the best plant to reduce itchiness in any type of condition. Mainly used in conditions such as eczema and dermatitis where itchiness is involved, you will find it a soothing and healing cream for the skin.

-Apply a cool compress to itchy areas. A cool washcloth may be enough to relieve itching. If you use an ice pack, be sure to use a barrier of cloth between it and the patient, and apply it no more often than 20 minutes every two hours.

- Skin Cleansing - Keeping the skin clean can reduce itching related to sweating and is important to reduce the risk of infections from scratching. It's important to use only soap that is mild and non-drying.

- Treat your kidneys as a whole. As mentioned above, the root cause is the damaged kidneys, thereby, you are suggested to control the kidney damage. As kidneys improve function, they will remove the internal toxins and regulate the phosphate in the blood. This is the basis to control the itching skin in patients of Kidney Failure.
