How Will Other Body Systems Be Affected If Kidneys Shut Down

How Will Other Body Systems Be Affected If Kidneys Shut DownAs kidneys shut down, a series of symptoms and metabolic disorders will appear. This is because damaged kidneys fail to regulate the inner body system correctly, and then various body systems are affected easily. These body systems are damaged by impaired kidneys usually via the following aspects.

1. Water, electrolyte and acid-base metabolic disorder

Metabolic acidosis: In the stage of chronic kidney failure, some metabolic acid products such as phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid will build up in the blood for renal excretory deficiency. Then, patients are more likely to have nausea, vomiting, fatigue and deep breath.

Fluid and sodium metabolic disorder: When kidneys shut down, their ability to determine how much sodium and fluid to retain in the body. If patients don't control their fluid and sodium intake correctly, swelling will appear in eyelids, legs, lung, abdomen, or even heart.

Potassium metabolic disorder: When GFR declines to 20~25 ml/min or lower, the kidney's ability to excrete potassium will decline. Then, muscle, heart and gastrointestinal tract are affected easily.

Calcium and phosphorus metabolic disorder: As extra phosphorus builds up in the blood, less calcium can be absorbed by the body. High phosphorus level and low calcium level can attack patients' bone, skin, parathyroid, and muscle easily.

2. Protein, sugar, fat and vitamin metabolic disorder

The protein metabolic disorder for chronic renal failure patients usually presents build up of metabolic waste products including urea, guanidine compound, creatinine, amine, and some other waste chemicals. In the same time, sugar, fat and vitamin balance in the body are also disturbed.

These disorders usually affect kidney patients' cardiovascular system, breathing system, gastrointestinal tract, bleeding system, nerve system, bone, and many other organs and systems.

If patients whose kidneys shut down have any of the above problems, they should tell their doctor immediately and accept effective treatment plan.
