Kidney Failure: Serum Creatinine Level 8 After Dialysis

Kidney Failure: Serum Creatinine Level 8 After DialysisQ: My father has been on dialysis for 4 years. He has Kidney Failure. And after dialysis, his creatinine level lowered down to 8 from 13. But he still has some sufferings, such as breathlessness, weakness. But his urine output is normal. Will he need to increase his dialysis times?

A: thank you for your inquiry. As you said his creatinine level is pretty high even though after dialysis his creatinine stays 8 which is still high, which means there is much toxin substances stored in his body.

And those toxin substances will be related to the other systems problem such as respiratory system, digestive system, nerve system etc. That is why your father now has breathless. And as the damage of renal function leads to his kidneys can’t secrete EPO to stimulate the red blood cell production which leads to his weakness. His HB level must be very low at present.

For your father’s condition, I suggest him to have more times dialysis to discharge the toxin substances and at the same time to have his renal function improved. It is hard to his doctor to suggest him something to eat as anything may lead to his electrolytes get worse. But he is so weak right now, some food such as fungus, papaya, watermelon, strawberry etc. And if your father is not a vegetarian, he can eat some fish and chicken without skin, and eat more egg whites.

As you said his urine output is normal, that means his kidneys still work well to produce urine. But you need pay attent to his urine chances, such as urine color and smell which can also be indications to your father’s conditions.

This is just a rough and simple analysis as I had no more details on your father’s condition. If you need any fellow up or further help, please leave a message below or just contact and I will try to give you a reply as soon as possible.
