GFR Level of Renal Failure

GFR Level of Renal FailureGlomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best test to measure your level of kidney function and determine your stage of kidney disease. Renal failure is also known as end stage renal disease (ESRD), referring that your kidneys are functioning abnormally with severe decreased GFR. What is the GFR level of renal failure after all?

What does renal failure mean?

Renal failure or kidney failure is Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Each stage has a corresponding GFR level, reflecting your kidney function and helping your doctor take plan treatment. The following list is the five stages with different GFR:

Stage 1: Kidney damage and normal GFR≧90ml/min

Stage 2: Kidney damage and mild decrease in GFR 60-89ml/min

Stage 3 : Moderate decrease in GFR 30-59ml/min

Stage 4 : Severe decrease in GFR 15-29ml/min

Stage 5 : Kidney failure, GFR<15ml/min

How is the GFR calculated?

Your doctor can calculate it from the results of your blood creatinine test, your age, body size and gender. The earlier kidney disease is detected, the better the chance of slowing or stopping its progression.

How to increase GFR of renal failure?

The glomerular filtration becomes low because glomeruli are damaged, failing to filtrating the excessive wastes and fluids in the body. Then what have caused the glomeruli damage? The factors vary from different kinds of kidney diseases, some of which are inherited and some of which are caused by diabetes, hypertension or auto-immune disorders. If the kidney disease has caused glomeruli damage, the GRF will decline. As for renal failure, people have lost more than 85% of the kidney function. It means that most of the nephrons are injured.

Therefore, on one hand, you should take immediate measures to save the healthy nephrons, so as to prevent them from being attacked, protecting the remaining kidney function. On the other hand, repairing the damaged kidney tissues. By improving those nephrons’ self-repairing capability, the micro blood circulation will return back to normal, and thus it can provide blood and oxygen for glomeruli. By this way, patients with renal failure will see an increased GFR.
