Why Patients With Kidney Failure Have Muscle Twitching

Why Patients With Kidney Failure Have Muscle TwitchingPatents with kidney failure will have many symptoms, and a common symptom is muscle twitching. Muscle twitching often make patients sleepless at night. Thereby, why patients with kidney failure have muscle twitching?

Muscle twitching often appears in patients who are in the late stage of kidney failure, in which patients’ kidneys are damaged severely. So many wastes and toxic substances will accumulate in patients’ blood vessels, and these substances will be taken to every organ and tissue around our body, which may cause many damages.

In fact, muscle twitching is mainly caused by the shortage of calcium, and the shortage of calcium may be caused by several reasons.

Shortage of vitamin D

For one reason, the shortage of calcium is caused by the shortage of vitamin D, because vitamin D has the function of promoting our intestines and stomach’s absorption to calcium. As we know, patients have strict restriction in their diet, and this may cause the shortage of vitamin D. Besides, patients with kidney damage may also have disorder in the metabolism of vitamin D, which will also hinder the absorption of calcium.

On the other hand, the shortage of calcium is caused by the increase of phosphorus. Patients with kidney failure will have low glomerular filtration rate, and this is easy to cause patients to have hyperphosphatemia. In normal condition, the metabolism of phosphorus and calcium is in a balance state. When patients have hyperphosphatemia mildly, their calcium level will be down, and patients will also have muscle twitching in this time.

Thereby, muscles twitching in patients with kidney failure is caused by hypocalcemia. Hypocalcemia can increase muscle’s irritability, and to patients who have mild hypocalcemia, they may have paralysis just in their lips and limbs. While to patients with severe hypocalcemia, they can have spasm in their muscles and bones throughout their body.
