Can Kidney Failure Patients Eat Celery

Can Kidney Failure Patients Eat CeleryCelery is a friendly vegetable for healthy people, because it is rich in rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin P, nicotinic acid, calcium, phosphorus, naphtha, carotene and other nutrition needed by our body. However, is celery good for Kidney Failure patients? There is no an absolute answer. Whether celery is good for kidney failure patients or not depends on the patients’ specific illness conditions.

The reason against eating celery:

As what I have mentioned above, celery has rich potassium, which is likely to be harmful to the Kidney Failure patients.. As a Kidney Failure patient, his or her damaged kidneys cannot keep the balance of electrolyte, resulting in large deposition of potassium in the blood, So, if you keep on eating celery, you will increase the amount of potassium in blood. For that matter, you;d better not eat celery.

The reasons for eating celery:

1. Lowering blood pressure. Butyl phthalides ( often called “Sedanolide”) in celery is helpful for reducing the secretion of epinephrine so that celery can lower and moderate the blood pressure.

2. Reducing swelling. Celery has some diuretic ingredients, which are the good “dischargers” of the extra sodium and fluid. Thereby, the swelling will be relieved.

3. Preventing anemia. Due to kidney damage, diseased kidneys can’t produce enough EPO that is one common reason for renal anemia. Besides, deposits of waste products and toxins in the blood and iron deficiency can also cause anemia. Minerals contained in the celery contribute to the development of red blood cells.

To sum up, celery is good for not everyone. If you have Kidney Failure, you are suggested to consult your doctor before you eat celery or you can find a free online service from us. Best wishes!
