Can Gout Cause Uremia

Can Gout Cause UremiaDo you think gout is one inherited disease that can only cause joint pain? Do you think young people won't have gout? These ideas are quite wrong. If young people have unhealthy eating habit, they may have gout eventually. What's worse, gout can induce chronic kidney failure or eventually uremia.

Gout is one metabolic disorder caused by the increase of uric acid formation which is due to purine metabolic disorder. Inherited factor is just one reason of gout. Even though patients don't have family history, long-term intake of high-purine foods such as beer, seafood, animal giblet and hot pot can also induce gout.

In the early stage, the decline of uric acid clearance rate can cause the increase of uric acid in the blood. In this condition, patients usually don't have any symptom. However, when the uric acid level in the blood is too high, monsodium urate crystals will build up in distal joint.

The clinical manifestations of gout

Acute episode of gout usually presents pain, red, fever, swelling and stiffness. Most often, these symptoms will appear suddenly.

How does gout induce uremia?

Arthritis and kidney disease are the main complications of gout. Because arthritis is painful, patients can find it easily. However, the onset of kidney disease is dormant, so most gout patients can't find kidney disease timely. If kidney disease is caused by gout, we call it uric acid nephropathy which is caused by purine metabolic disorder. According to clinical research, 17%~25% of gout patients eventually die of kidney failure.

In the past, patients with gouty nephropathy usually account for 1% of patients on dialysis. However, this proportion increases gradually in recent years. Experts predict this proportion will increase to more than 50% in the next 10 years.

Now, we can know it is quite important for gout patients to protect their kidneys and prevent uremia.
