What Does Renal Insufficiency Mean

What Does Renal Insufficiency MeanRenal insufficiency is one condition in which kidneys don’t have enough function to cleanse the internal environment and maintain the patients’ health. With renal insufficiency, patients should highly attention to their illness condition. What does renal insufficiency mean?

According to the characteristics, renal insufficiency is divided into acute renal insufficiency and chronic renal insufficiency. Today, we mainly talk about chronic renal insufficiency. It can be caused by various diseases including IgA Nephropathy, Lupus, Purpura Nephritis, chronic hypertension, diabetes, and so on. In clinic, renal insufficiency is always one difficult problem to overcome, because it continues to aggravate even if the underlying disease is reversed. According to kidney function level, renal insufficiency can be divided into four stages.

Stage 1: Some glomeruli, kidney filters, are damaged, but kidneys can still meet the body’s need to maintain health. In this stage, patients usually don’t have any symptom or problem.

Stage 2: 60%~75% of glomeruli are impaired, so kidneys have had certain obstacle to eliminate waste products and toxins. In this case, patients are more likely to have elevated high BUN and creatinine level, anemia, fatigue, weight loss, hematuria and some other symptoms.

Stage 3: 75%~95% of glomeruli are damaged, so kidneys are unable to maintain the stable internal environment. Then, obvious fatigue and anemia, frequent urination at night, obvious increase of creatinine and BUN, acidosis appears easily.

Stage 4: This stage is called uremic or end stage renal insufficiency. In this condition, more than 95% of kidney filters are damaged accompanying with some serious symptoms including nausea and vomiting, severe anemia, skin itching and bad taste in the mouth. Also, most of patients with renal insufficiency have begun dialysis or kidney transplant.
