Can Edema Cause Kidney Failure

Can Edema Cause Kidney FailureEdema is a common symptom in patients with kidney disease. For patients with severe condition, they can even have edema in their lungs, which can make them feel hard to breath. Can edema cause patients have kidney failure? While patients may have this worry if they face with that condition.

What are the causes of edema?

A major cause of edema is the retention of sodium and water.

Kidney has the function of excreting excess water and wastes out from our blood, while for patients who have kidney failure, their kidneys can not complete their work normally. When the excess water amount is more than the ability that can be removed by patient’s kidneys, the excess fluid will stay in patient’s body, which can cause patients to have edema. Thereby, patients already have severe kidney failure if their edema is caused by this condition.

Another common reason of edema is patient’s large amount of protein loss.

In normal condition, there will not be much protein in our urine, but when there are lesions in kidney tubules or glomeruli, a lot of nutrients will lose from patient’s kidneys, among which there will be much protein. Protein has the function of guaranteeing blood vessel’s osmotic pressure. If patients have lots of protein loss, their blood vessel’s osmotic pressure will decline, and much fluid in blood will flow into tissue space, which will cause patients to have edema.

For patients whose edema is caused by this reason, their kidney damage appears in nephron. Proteinuria can aggravate patient’s kidney damage gradually, and patient’s disease can develop into kidney failure eventually if it has not been well controlled.

Thereby, edema may can not cause kidney failure, but the cause of edema can cause patients to have kidney failure.
