Polycystic Kidney Disease and Anemia

Polycystic Kidney Disease and AnemiaAs PKD develops, especially, when it develops in to advanced kidney disease stage, anemia will become a symptom which is common to see.

Why PKD patients suffer from Anemia?

Anemia occurs on the conditions that your body fail to produce enough red blood cells. What is red blood cells? Red blood cells use oxygen to chance the glucose we get from food into energy. When there is no enough red blood cells, it indicates that less oxygen is sent to the cells. As a result, insufficient oxygen will induce that the orangs and tissues have less energy to function.

Why anemia commonly occurs in patients with PKD? Because kidney function decline may cause low erythropoietin levels. In normal condition, kidneys make several hormones and one of them is called erythropoietin(EPO).

When the body senses low oxygen levels, it tells the kidneys to release EPO. This hormone tells your bone marrow to make more red blood cells. More red blood cells in the bloodstream mean more oxygen can be transported. However, if the kidneys are damaged by enlarging Kidney Cysts, they may make little or no EPO, causing less red blood cells production.

How to cope with anemia in patients with PKD?

Firstly, we have to say that, you should focus on the underlying cause, otherwise, anemia may come and go. In other words, you should control your enlarging kidney cysts. A new natural therapy is developed and used in many cases, which make a big achievement for it can shrink the kidney cysts naturally and improve kidney functions by repairing the damaged kidney tissues.

Also, your diet will play an important part to make a difference in changing your anemia. If you are not getting enough iron, you will work on a meal plan that will include kidney-friendly foods rich in iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid.

In addition, some chemical drugs may also help alleviate the symptoms of anemia. However, it may cause side effects, if you take it for long time. If possible, you are suggested to try specific herbs which help your body improve red blood cells production.
