Why Do PKD Patients Get Breathless

Why Do PKD Patients Get BreathlessCompared with back pain, urinary tract infection and hematuria, breathlessness isn’t so common for patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease. However, with the progression of PKD, some patients do have this symptom. Why do these patients get breathless?

Kidneys are great organs that are responsible for filtering blood, regulating blood pressure, removing waste products and toxins, and so on. In the early stage, all kidney cysts are still small, so patients usually don’t have any symptom or problem. However, with the expansion of kidney cysts, kidneys will be damaged gradually. Then, patients will suffer from breathlessness eventually, because of two conditions.

- Pulmonary edema: When kidneys are damaged by enlarged kidney cysts, they are unable to remove extra fluid from the body normally. In severe cases, fluid retention will cause the formation of interstitial fluid in lung and backflow imbalance. This makes a large amount of tissue fluid not be absorbed by lung lymph and pulmonary vein system. The excessive amount of fluid will collect in alveolar, pulmonary interstitial and small bronchi, resulting in serious obstacle of pulmonary ventilation and ventilation function. In clinic, this is more likely to present extreme breathlessness.

- Heart failure: As we all know, high blood pressure is one common symptom of Polycystic Kidney Disease. If uncontrolled effectively, severe high blood pressure will induce heart disorder. Finally, patients may suffer from heart failure. When heart is involved in this disease, patients will get breathless.

From the above analysis, we have known the causes of breathlessness for patients with PKD. If you happen to have this problem, you are suggested to learn more about it from the doctor online. Then, doctors can guide you to take correct methods to deal with this problem.

Of course, if you want to get rid of this problem, you should seek some other therapies to shrink kidney cysts.
