How to Manage Frequent Urination for ADPKD

How to Manage Frequent Urination for ADPKDAlthough frequent urination isn’t as common as high blood pressure and back pain, it does affect quite a number of ADPKD patients. Since this symptom can reflect some underlying disorders, these patients should pay highly attention to the management of frequent urination.

What does frequent urination mean for patients with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease?

ADPKD is the common type of Polycystic Kidney Disease, and it causes a lot of cysts to develop in both kidneys. Frequent urination usually indicates urinary tract infection or kidney infection for patients with ADPKD.

With the growth of kidney cysts, enlarged cysts will oppress their surrounding kidney tissues. In turn, this oppressing pressure may lead kidney cysts to rupture easily, and then sac fluid will spread to other tissues and organs. Among them, urinary tract is often attacked. Besides, kidney stone is another cause of this problem.

How to treat frequent urination for patients with ADPKD?

In order to manage this problem effectively, patients should firstly detect the underlying cause. Only in this way, patients can get correct and effective treatment. If urinary frequency is caused by infection, the following managements are helpful.

- Drink plenty of water: Water can help flush the urinary tract and keep a clean internal environment for PKD patients. Therefore, if patients can still produce enough urine, they are recommended to drink a lot of water for slowing down the growth of kidney cysts and preventing urinary tract infections.

- Take antibiotics: In severe cases, antibiotics are needed to treat urinary tract infections, but patients should pay attention to the type of antibiotics to take. Otherwise, these medications may cause kidney damage easily.

- Shrink kidney cysts: Since expanded kidney cyst is the root cause of urinary tract infection, the fundamental treatment should be able to shrink these cysts. Some herbal medicines are proven to have this effect. (If you would like, you can tell us more about your illness condition online, so we can determine what medicines are helpful for you.)

The treatment should change if frequent urination is caused by other conditions. Always make sure the treatment is most suitable for your health.
