The Common PKD Symptoms in Women

Common PKD Symptoms in Women Polycystic Kidney Disease is one common inherited kidney disorder both in women and men, but because women’s specific body structure, some PKD symptoms are more obvious in female. Today, we are here to introduce the most common symptoms of PKD in women.

1. Urinary tract infection

Because women’s genital structure, they are at high risk of urinary tract infections which present frequent and painful urination. With the progression of PKD, kidney cysts become larger and larger, so they rupture easily and their sac fluid is more likely to spread to urinary tract infections. Besides, kidney stone, one common PKD complication, moves through urinary tract can also cause urinary tract infections.

2. Back pain

PKD patients have either chronic dull or sharp back pain that reveals different causes. Chronic dull back pain indicates enlarged kidney cysts, while sharp back pain reveals the onset of kidney cyst rupture or kidney stone. In some cases, back pain is so severe that patients may be unable to bear.

3. High blood pressure

High blood pressure is usually the first sign of Polycystic Kidney Disease and often occurs at age 20-30. For women with PKD, their high blood pressure is caused by renal anoxia and ischemia state, and this symptom will worsen patients’ illness condition if uncontrolled effectively.

4. Hematuria

Hematuria often occurs along with urinary tract infection or back pain. To prevent more severe complications, these women are suggested to have more rest in bed and drink more water or cranberry juice. If necessary, antibiotics are needed.

5. Proteinuria

It is not so common that women with PKD suffer from proteinuria or foamy urine, because this symptom indicates kidney charge barrier is damaged. In this case, patients should take effective treatment to protect their kidneys immediately. Otherwise, they may suffer from kidney failure in the near future.
