A Kidney Friendly Diet for ADPKD

A Kidney Friendly Diet for ADPKDIf one person has autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), he or she should follow a kidney friendly diet that can slow down the progression of kidney disease and manage PKD complications.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease causes numerous cysts to develop in kidneys. With the secretion of sac fluid, kidney cysts become larger and larger. Then, expanded kidney cysts can replace kidney functioning tissues gradually. During this progression, patients may suffer from high blood pressure, back pain, urinary tract infections, etc, one by one. According to the characteristics of polycystic kidney disease, we give out the following dietary suggestions.

1. Avoid high salty food

Salty food may make patients take in extra sodium easily, while extra sodium intake can cause more fluid to retain in the body, resulting in high blood pressure and swelling. High blood pressure is one dangerous risk for patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease, because it may trigger further kidney damage easily. In view of this, patients should stay away from processed foods, canned foods, fried potatoes, salty condiment, and so on.

2. Follow a low-protein diet

It is unwise for ADPKD patients to consume large amounts of protein, because protein metabolic waste products like urea are eliminated from the body via kidneys. Normally, kidneys can remove these products thoroughly. However, once kidneys are damaged by enlarged kidney cysts, extra protein intake will cause kidneys to overwork that can induce further kidney damage easily.

3. Stay away from caffeine-containing drinks and foods

It is reported that caffeine is one substance that may stimulate the growth of kidney cysts and increase the risk of kidney stones for patients with ADPKD. Thereby, it is important for these patients to avoid caffeine-containing drinks and foods such as coffee, coco cola, chocolate, and so on.
