A Right Diet Plan for Stage 3 PKD Patients

A Right Diet Plan for Stage 3 PKD PatientsAt Stage 3 Polycystic Kidney Disease, some kidney cysts have grown to certain size. Therefore, patients begin to have a series of symptoms and complications. A right diet plan can help manage Stage 3 PKD to some extent.

- Low-sodium diet

High blood pressure is usually the first sign of Polycystic Kidney Disease. A low-sodium diet plan can help control high blood pressure, and this diet plan suggests patients with Stage 3 PKD to take in sodium of 1,500 to 2,000 mg every day. Thereby, patients should avoid high-sodium foods such as canned foods, processed foods, bacon, salty condiment, etc.

- Low-protein diet

Protein is one essential nutrition to build up tissues, but extra protein intake will cause a series of problems for kidney patients because of low kidney function. At stage 3 PKD, patients may be suggested to take in 0.8g/kg body weight of protein every day. Here, we would like to emphasize that patients should choose high-quality protein.

- Limiting the purine-containing foods

PKD patients are usually at a risk of kidney stones which are caused by buildup of uric acid. Uric acid is generated from purine, so patients should stay away from purine-containing foods such as animal giblets and sea foods.

- Try a vegetarian diet plan

As introduced by nephrologists, a vegetarian diet plan can help slow down the growth of kidney cysts. Thereby, patients with Stage 3 Polycystic Kidney Disease should eat more vegetables and fruits. However, if their potassium or phosphorus level is higher than the normal, they should notice their intake of high-potassium or high-phosphorus foods.

If you are suffering from Stage 3 PKD, you are recommended to follow a correct diet plan based on patients’ medical condition. To learn more about your meal plan, you can consult the doctor online.
