Appropriate Meals for Stage 4 Polycystic Kidney Disease

Appropriate Meals for Stage 4 Polycystic Kidney Disease Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) can divide Polycystic Kidney Disease into five stages. Stage 4 PKD means kidneys are functioning at 15%~29%. If it continues to progress, patients will be faced by end stage kidney failure. Appropriate meals can help slow down this progression.

1. Avoid high-sodium foods

Polycystic Kidney Disease can cause less blood to flow into kidneys and extra fluid to retain in the body. Finally, some symptoms especially high blood pressure occur easily. In order to control high blood pressure, patients are suggested to develop a low-sodium diet and avoid canned foods, fast foods and processed foods.

2. Take in high-quality protein

In stage 4 PKD, patients may suffer from proteinuria, and kidneys are unable to filter blood normally. To reduce the burden on kidneys and meet the body’s need, patients must develop a low-protein diet and make sure more than half of their protein intake is from high-quality protein. Lean meat, milk, egg white and fish are good sources of high-quality protein.

3. Use flaxseed oil and olive oil to replace animal oil

These types of oil contain rich unsaturated fatty acid which can help prevent inflammatory reactions within kidneys and maintain cardiovascular health, so they can protect the remaining kidney functioning tissues. However, animal oil may increase the risk of cardiovascular disorders. Thereby, patients should add flaxseed oil and olive oil to their dishes.

4. Avoid oxalate-containing and purine-rich foods

Foods rich in oxalate or purine can cause kidney stones easily, while kidney stone is one common complication of Polycystic Kidney Disease. Therefore, patients had better avoid these foods such as beer, chocolate, coffee, animal giblets, sea foods, and so on.

The above are some basic dietary suggestions for patients with Stage 4 PKD. If you want to get more detailed suggestions, you can leave a message below or have a communication with doctor online.
