Polycystic kidney disease diet help manage a better kidney for patients. Even though PKD diet cannot shrink the kidney cyst and improve kidney function, it helps slow down the development of polycystic kidney disease and alleviate its symptoms.

PKD Diet Principles

Personalized diet will always make a better outcome. If you have not found a specific diet based on your conditions, the following common PKD diet principles can be information for you.

- Low-protein diet that helps slow the progression of chronic disease in other kidney patients has no proven benefit to people with PKD.

- Low-potassium and low-phosphorus diets to offset the high serum levels of these minerals.

- PKD patients are suggested to eat foods low in overall protein, but high in soy protein.

- Try to eat a lot of high-fiber foods that can combat insulin resistance -- high insulin levels have been linked with heart disease and faster rates of PKD progression.

Food List for PKD

Besides the general PKD diet principles, a detailed food list will be more useful.

Avoided or Limited Food List for PKD:

- processed foods, soups, chips and soy sauce

-coffee, chocolate, black tea, green tea, white tea, cola and even some decaf products.

- milk, organ meats, beer

- acorn squash, potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, orange juice, lentils and other legumes

Suggested Food List for PKD:

- mushrooms, onions and green peppers

- papaya, prune juice, honeydew and cantaloupe melon, banana, raisins, mango, pears and oranges and orange juice

- oily fish (salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines), flaxseed or linseed, and walnuts and pecans
