Can Polycystic Kidney Disease Patient Drink Strong Tea

Polycystic Kidney Disease is a chronic kidney disorder which usually be found in one’s 20s and develops into Kidney Failure in one’s 50s. Strong tea is a common drink in daily life. Is it a good choice for people with PKD?

I am afraid the answer is no. Strong tea usually contains caffeine. The caffeine content in a cup of normal tea is the same as 30%-50% caffeine in a cup of coffee, and the caffeine can stimulate the Kidney Cyst liquid secretion which will make the renal cysts growing faster.

And on the other side, there is much tannic acid in strong tea can combine with iron which is easy to lead to low HB. You can drink some weak tea if you like drinking tea. And green tea should be a better choice, you know the TP (tea polyphenol) in green tea can stop the caffeine effect in the stomach and then avoid secreting more gastric acid, so drinking green tea can improve the central nervous function, heart function and the liver function without the disadvantage of caffeine. But please do not drink too much tea, as 300ml-400ml each day is OK and drink it more than half an hour after meals.

And it is good for you that never eat garlic, you know for PKD and renal cyst patients, spicy food is the most they should be avoid which can slower the cysts getting bigger.

There are more than 50% PKD patients will have kidney stone, liver cysts or spleen cysts, and strong tea can also worsen these complications. This is another reason why strong tea is not suggested by people with polycystic kidney disease.
