What Diet Should Patient With PKD Have

What Diet Should Patient With PKD HavePolycystic kidney disease (PKD) means there are innumerable cysts in patient’s kidneys, and they will progress gradually, which will damage patient’s kidney structure in this process.

There is no cure for PKD so far, but a well control for patient’s condition is very necessary. And diet plays a key role in regulating our health, so a diet that is suitable for PKD patient is very important. In fact, there are some points that should be cared by PKD patients in their diet.

1.Low salt:

PKD patients can have hypertension when they are in the early stage, while much sodium in blood can cause high blood pressure, so patient’s diet should have low salt, which is the main source of sodium.

2.Low protein:

Patient with PKD should also have low protein in his diet, because protein can produce lots of metabolic wastes which should be filtrated out by kidney. So, much excess protein intake will aggravate patient’s kidney workload, and may reduce patient’s kidney function.

on the other hand, there are eight kinds of amino acid that can not be composited by our body, so it is necessary for patient to take high-quality protein to get these supply.

3.Moderate calory:

Increasing the intake of moderate calory is very helpful for patient’s kidney and overall health. Moderate calory intake can guarantee patient’s body activity and reduce the decomposition of protein in patient’s body.

4.Avoiding caffeine:

Caffeine can stimulate the secretion of cyst fluid, which will promote the progression of PKD. So, it is necessary for PKD patients to avoid taking foods that contain much caffeine, like coffee, chocolate, etc.

5.Regulating potassium intake:

In the early stage of PKD, increasing the intake of potassium is helpful for lowering high blood pressure, so patient may be recommended to take foods that contain abundant potassium. But when patients’ kidney is damaged severely, they often have the metabolic disorder of potassium, and hyperkalemia is more likely to appear, so patient may need to reduce his potassium intake at this point.

6.Regulating calcium and phosphorus intake:

The metabolic disorder of calcium and phosphorus also often appear when patient’s kidney function is damaged severely, and it can cause many health problems, so it is important for patient to regulate these substances’intake at this point. Phosphorus and calcium compete for absorption, and patient often have hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia, so patient is more likely to increase his calcium intake and reduce his phosphorus intake.

While every patient has his own condition, so the specific regulation of these nutrients should be made according to patient’s own condition, and it is necessary for patient to look for help from his doctor and a dietitian.
