Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic kidney disease, and it has no cure so far. There will be innumerable cysts in patient’s kidneys, which will progress gradually, and these cysts will damage patient’s kidney gradually as they grow bigger and bigger, which can lead to kidney failure eventually.
While, patient may have this question: does everyone with PKD will have kidney failure?
In America, PKD is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure, and about 5% of all kidney failure is caused by PKD. It is also to say, PKD is a common reason that can lead to kidney failure. But in fact, the truth is that PKD will not progress into kidney failure determinately.
PKD is divided into autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD).
Does every ARPKD patient will have kidney failure?
Patients with ARPKD will have bad prognosis, because almost all patients’ disease will progress into kidney failure when they are children. On the other hand, this kind of PKD is rare.
Does everyone with ADPKD will have kidney failure?
ADPKD is the common PKD. In fact, patient’s disease can appear after his birth, but it usually causes no obvious symptoms until patient’s youth age or middle age. And for most patients, it will need another ten years before patient’s disease progresses into kidney failure, while if patient can accept appropriate treatment, the coming time of kidney failure will be prolonged obviously, or it may be avoided.
Surgery has shown about half patients have kidney failure when they are by age 60, and about 60% patients can have kidney failure by age 70.
