Why Do Nephrotic Syndrome Patients Pick Up Weight

Why Do Nephrotic Syndrome Patients Pick Up WeightNephrotic Syndrome is one common kidney disorder that may affect people at any age especially children. If people have this disease, some of them may suffer from weight gain. Why do these patients pick up weight?

If the patient is child and his weight gains slowly with their age, it may be one normal condition. However, if his weight picks up abnormally, it may be due to two conditions.

One is fluid and sodium retention. In clinic, heavy proteinuria and severe swelling are two typical symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome. Swelling is resulted from extra fluid retaining in the body. With the collection of fluid in the body, patients’ weight gains slowly.

The other one is side effect of steroids such as prednisone and glucocorticoid. These medicines are used to ease patients’ proteinuria through inhibiting inflammatory reactions within kidneys and preventing protein from leaking into urine. However, these medicines may also cause a lot of side effects including weight gain, moon face, swelling, nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, slow growth, and so on. From this point, we can know weight gain is one common side effect of these medicines.

Here, we can know the two reasons of picking up weight for patients with Nephrotic Syndrome. After finding out the causes of weight gain for Nephrotic Syndrome patients, they should take corresponding treatments to control this symptom and improve patients’ health condition.

The detailed treatment plan should depend on patients’ illness condition. To ease fluid retention, patients can try diuretics that can stimulate kidneys to eliminate more fluid. If it is caused by steroids, patients can use Immunotherapy or Clear Blood Pollution Therapy. These therapies have few side effects, so patients can use them without worry.
