How to Live With Membranous Nephropathy: Skin Care, Diet, Medicine Care

Membranous Nephropathy usually develops gradually and shows no obvious symptoms, so many people even live with it for years without any recognition. How to live well with membranous nephropathy? With your permission, I am glad to give some suggestions on skin care, diet care and medicine care.

Skin care

Membranous nephropathy can easily cause dry, fragile skin or become infected. I suggest to take care of your children’s skin by:

- Avoiding hot water to bathe

- Check for areas that are red, warm to the touch, or bleeding.

- Use baking soda or cornstarch powders on areas of your skin that become irritated.

- Avoid chemicals that may irritate the skin, such as rubbing alcohol, soaps, detergents, or solvents.

- Avoid tight-fitting clothes and shoes.

Diet

The best way for you to try to control your child's swelling is to limit the amount of salt she eats and drinks. Even normal amounts of salt will cause the body to retain fluid. A dietitian will work with you to help plan a low-salt diet for your child and explain how to reduce salt in the diet. My suggestions for reducing salt intake include: choose fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits, choose foods marked “low-salt” or “low-sodium”; flavor your foods with herbs and spices such as basil, tarragon, or mint, or use salt-free sauces or lemon juice.

Medicine Care

Some medicines may cause acture Kidney Failure, as they may be toxic to your kidneys. For people with Membranous Nephropathy, the following medicines may be no safe enough. Take to your doctor, before you take it.

- Ulcer medicines such as cimetidine (Tagamet)

- Antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, amphotericin B, bacitracin, and vancomycin

- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or aspirin

- Blood pressure medicines called ACE inhibitors (such as captopril and ramipril) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).

- Medicines used to treat HIV(protease inhibitors), such as indinavir and ritonavir.

- Illegal drugs, such as heroin and methamphetamine.

- Medicines used for cancer treatment (chemotherapy), such as cisplatin, carboplatin, and methotrexate.

Besides management on diet, skin problem and medicine, healthy psychological movements, exercise, travel care, precautions on OTC drugs, Emergency Preparedness etc help improve the outcome of living with membranous nephropathy.
