Prognostic Features of Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome

The prognosis of pediatric nephrotic syndrome may involve in chances of complications, recovery period, duration of the disease and other outcomes of nephrotic syndrome in children.

Things the affects the prognosis of pediatric nephrotic syndrome

The common things that affects the prognosis of pediatric nephrotic syndrome include symptoms, kidney functions, pathological type and underlying cause.

1. Symptoms. High blood pressure and anemia may cause poor prognosis in childhood nephrotic syndrome. If blood pressure can be controlled well, the patients who only suffer from proteinuria or microscopic hematuria tend to show a better prognosis.

2. Kidney functions. As nephrotic syndrome develops, damages on renal tubules will follow. This will lower kidney functions. If the renal function is normal or can be recovered the prognosis is good, however if the renal function is severely damaged and the illness has developed in the stage of renal failure the prognosis is poor.

3. Pathological type. Pediatric nephrotic syndrome can be classified into 5 stages, including minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerulonephritis, membraneous nephropathy and messangial proliferative glomerulonephritis. The more advanced the stage is, the poorer prognosis will be.

4. Underlying cause. The prognosis is good if nephrotic syndrome is caused by tonsillitis or hemolytic streptococcus while the prognosis is poor if NS is secondary to systemic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, purpura, etc.

- Vascular disease.
