The Proper Amount of Protein to Consume for Membranous Nephropathy Patients

The Proper Amount of Protein to Consume for Membranous Nephropathy PatientsMembranous Nephropathy is one autoimmune disorder in which immune complexes deposit in the walls of capillaries inside kidneys. This causes the capillary walls to thicken, so proteins leak from kidneys into urine, resulting in a series of problems. In this case, consuming proper amount of protein can help manage membranous nephropathy.

Protein is one essential nutrition for our body, and its breakdown waste products are discharged by kidneys. Normally, healthy kidneys can eliminate these wastes thoroughly, but when kidneys are attacked, their filtration ability will diminish. Therefore, extra protein intake makes kidneys work harder to remove the product of protein decomposition.

What is the proper amount of protein consumption for Membranous Nephropathy patients? The amount should depend on patients’ illness condition.

If patients’ Membranous Nephropathy presents the form of Nephrotic Syndrome or patients have heavy proteinuria, they can take in 0.8~1.0g/kg high-quality protein every day.

If they don’t have obvious proteinuria and have normal kidney function, 0.8g/kg high-quality protein one daily is suitable. Then, with the decline of their glomerular filtration rate (GFR), their protein intake should modify timely. Find out how much you can take in protein every day.

When GFR is more than 60ml/min, patients can take in 0.8g/(kg·d) protein.

When GFR ranges from 15 to 59ml/min, patients can take in 0.6g/(kg·d) protein.

When GFR is less than 15ml/min and patients haven’t begun dialysis, they can take in 0.4g/(kg·d) protein.

When patients have started dialysis, they can increase their protein intake to 1.0~1.2g/(kg·d).

Now, we have known the proper amount of protein to consume for Membranous Nephropathy patients. Furthermore, the type of protein supplement is also quite important. If you want to know what foods are good for you to meet your protein need, you can ask the dietitian online.
