Anemia with Chronic Kidney Disease and Lupus

Anemia is a complication which happens in patient with Chronic Kidney Disease. If your kidney disease is caused by lupus, you can be diagnosed with lupus nephritis.

Lupus Nephritis

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. The kidney disease that occurs in systemic lupus erythematosus are lupus nephritis or lupus glomerulonephritis. Lupus nephritis is an important and potentially serious symptom of lupus.

Lupus Nephritis and Anemia

Anemia means there are not enough red blood cells to function enough to keep you in a healthy condition. Kidneys, in healthy conditions, help make erythropoietin (EPO) which tells your bone marrow to make more red blood cells. When kidneys are impaired, they make less EPO, causing Anemia. This is a reason why patients with Lupus Nephritis will experience anemia.

Another reason should be also responsible for anemia in patients with CKD and Lupus. Damaged kidneys fail to work well and the waste products will build up in the kidneys and make the high toxic level. Since the body is unable to get rid of this waste, it remains in the bloodstream where it can shorten the lifespan of the existing red blood cells, causing anemia.

Treatment for Anemia in CKD and Lupus

From the mentioned information, we can see that the underlying cause of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease patients is the damaged kidneys. Thereby, treatments which help repair the damaged kidneys and improve kidney functions will be recommended. To achieve this goal, Chinese Herbal Medicine is suggested to meet the need.

However, we have to see the difference between CKD patients and Lupus Nephritis. In lupus nephritis, it is the lupus which causes kidney damage. Thereby, only the lupus control can reverse the root cause and prevent kidney damage relapse. Immunotherapy is designed for autoimmune disease and lupus is a good example of immune disorder.
