Why Patient With Lupus Nephritis Often Has Ankle Swelling

Why Patient With Lupus Nephritis Often Has Ankle Swelling Patient with lupus nephritis can have many obvious symptoms, among which a common symptom is swelling in patient’s ankle.

Is ankle swelling a severe condition for patient with lupus nephritis?

In fact, ankle swelling refers to edema, and it is just a reflection of patient’s health problem, and it does not cause many health problems, but it indeed can affect patient’s life quality.

Besides, ankle swelling is just a beginning of edema. If the cause of edema has not been well controlled, it can cause more severe symptoms, like pulmonary edema and abdominal edema.

Why patient with lupus nephritis often has ankle swelling?

In fact, edema in patient with kidney disease is mainly caused by two reasons. One is the retention of fluid and sodium in body , and the other is severe proteinuria.

For patient whose kidney function has decreased to a certain degree, his kidney will fail to remove the excess fluid out from his body. Then the excess fluid will flow into the tissue space, so patient will have edema. While edema caused by this reason is more likely to appear when patient is in the late stage of his disease.

And as we have said, ankle swelling is just a beginning of patient’s edema, and it can appear when patient is not in the moderate stage of kidney disease. So, this symptom is more likely to be caused patient’s massive proteinuria.

Protein is an important substance in regulating the osmotic pressure of blood. When patient has much protein loss, the osmotic pressure of his blood vessel will decrease, and lots of fluid in his blood will flow into the tissue space, and then patient will have edema. Because the decrease of osmotic pressure in patient’s blood vessel and the affect of gravity, fluid is more likely to flow into the lower part of patient’s body, and that is why patient has ankle swelling.
