Learn more about proteinuria and Lupus

For people with Lupus, proteinuria may occur in two conditions. One condition is that simple proteinuria or hematuria is more likely to occur in the early-stage Lupus. The other condition is that proteinuria may indicate the onset of Lupus Nephritis. According to these causes, Lupus patients should develop the following diet plan.

Diet for proteinuria caused by Lupus

1. Supplement high-quality protein

As a large amount of protein leaks into urine, patients are at a high risk of malnutrition and swelling. From this point, it is a must to supplement high-quality protein timely. Milk, egg white, lean meat, fish, etc, just are good choices.

2. Control the total amount of protein intake

If kidneys have been involved in Lupus, management of protein intake can help reduce the burden on kidneys because of fewer waste products. If patients still have high kidney function level, they are recommended to take in about 0.8 g/kg of high-quality protein one daily. Otherwise, they may need to reduce the amount to some extent.

3. Develop a low-salt diet

Lupus patients get swelling easily because of protein leakage or fluid retention. A low-salt diet is able to prevent fluid retention. From this point, canned foods, salty condiments, cheese, salty drinks, etc, had better be avoided.

4. Try to stay away from alfalfa

Soya bean, broad bean, red bean and many kinds of bean contain alfalfa that can make immune system overwork and aggravate Lupus. For this reason, Lupus patients have to try to avoid alfalfa-containing foods.

The above are only some dietary requirements for Lupus patients. If you want to learn more about detailed suggestions or a food list to eat or avoid, you can send email to kidneyservice@hotmail.com or kidneyservice@hotmail.com. We are glad to share them with you.
