Low Protein Recipes for Lupus NephritisIf you have been diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis, your doctor may have told you to follow a low protein diet. You may be wondering how to include correct amount of protein in your diet. Here are some tips on low protein recipes for lupus and kidney disease.

Protein recommendations for different stages of Lupus Nephritis

Stages 1-2 with GFR of 60-90 or above: 0.8-1.2 g/kg body weight

Stages 3-4 with GFR of 20-60: 0.6-0.8 g/kg body weight

Stages 4-5 with GFR of 5-20 : ideal 20 grams, Max 30 grams*

* Kindly notice that these recommendations are for those who are not undergoing Dialysis. Protein intake should be increased once one start dialysis.

The recommended dietary protein intake for clinically stable maintenance hemodialysis patients is 1.2 g/kg body weight/d, and 1.2 -1.3 g/kg body weight/d for individuals on peritoneal dialysis. Chat with our online doctor on the best amount in your case!

What are good food sources?

Good choices include fish, chicken breast, lean red meats, low cholesterol egg product, and low fat soy products as well as low fat dairy products.

If your phosphorus level goes above normal, foods that are high in both protein and phosphorus need to be limited. These foods include milk, yogurt, cheese, nuts and seeds, peanut butter and some soy products.
