Should I Be Alarmed If My BUN Level Is 32  Should I be alarmed if my BUN level is 32? Patient with kidney disease who has high BUN level may have this concern, while this depends on patient’s condition.

What is BUN?

BUN is the abbreviation of blood urea nitrogen, and it is a common standard to learn about patient’s kidney condition.

Protein mainly consists of amino acid, and amino acid will be decomposed in blood and more substances will be produced. While some substances will be used to produce urea in liver, and about half ingredient in urea consists of nitrogen.

What is the normal level of BUN?

Urea need to be filtered out by our kidney, and it changes in a stable range, and that is 9~20mg/dL. In fact, our kidney has strong metabolic ability, and BUN will not rise unless more than half kidney function is damaged.

Should I be alarmed if my BUN level is 32?

As we have said, when patient find he has high BUN level, that may be a dangerous sign, which may mean patient already has severe kidney failure at this point. As we know, that is a dangerous condition.

On the other hand, many factors can affect BUN level, and cause patient to have high BUN level. For example, if patient do not have diet restriction, and when he take lots of foods that contain abundant protein, patient will have high BUN level. If patient has large fluid loss, it will also cause BUN level rise. Besides, many other factors can also cause patient to have high BUN level. In fact, if patient’s high BUN caused by these factors, his BUN level can recover to normal level soon if patient take right measures to cope with. While if patient’s high BUN is caused by kidney failure, high BUN will be persistent.

Thereby, if patient find he has high BUN level, he should firstly make sure whether his symptom is caused by kidney failure. Besides, whether or not patient’s high BUN is caused by kidney failure, patient should not be alarmed, but he should have confidence to deal with his condition.
