- Keep proper protein intake

Patients with FSGS often have proteinuria, so some patients may think they should eat more protein to meet the body’s need. In fact, it’s wrong. Just like patients with other types of chronic kidney disease, patients with FSGS should limit their protein intake tightly everyday. This is because extra protein intake will tax kidneys and speed up the progression of kidney damage.

- Drink correct amount of fluid

Because of fluid and sodium retention in the body, many patients with FSGS may have swelling and high blood pressure. If they take in too much fluid, it will increase the blood volume and cause more fluid to retain in the blood, aggravating high blood pressure and swelling. Thereby, patients with FSGS should limit their fluid intake, and the amount of fluid they can take depends on their edema degree and kidney damage severity.

- Follow low-phosphorus and low-potassium diet

Generally, patients don’t need to control their phosphorus and potassium intake, unless their kidneys have been damaged severely.
