Can A Second Kidney Transplant Be Done If FSGS Comes Back On Transplanted Kidney

Can A Second Kidney Transplant Be Done If FSGS Comes Back On Transplanted KidneyFSGS is a kidney disease which can be caused by many factors, and it is a disease can cause damage in glomeruli directly, which often lead to Nephrotic Syndrome. If this disease has not been well controlled, it can progress into kidney failure eventually.

For patients with FSGS, kidney transplant is a method to prolong their lifetime when patients are in the late stage of FSGS. In fact, many FSGS patients who have accepted kidney transplant may find their disease comes back, and to prolong patient’s lifetime, should a second kidney transplant be done at this point?

Why FSGS comes back on transplanted kidney?

For patients with FSGS who have accept kidney transplant, their disease has a high relapse rate, and it is said the recurrence rate of FSGS in patients who have accepted kidney transplant is about 30%~40%, or even higher.

In fact, it is said there is TteRRF in FSGS patients’ body, which lead to the relapse of FSGS in transplanted kidney. For some FSGS patients who have kidney transplant, their disease can relapse immediately just after they accept kidney transplant, because some patients may begin to have massive proteinuria in 24 hours after their kidney transplant, and their disease can become very obvious after several months.

Can a second kidney transplant be done if FSGS comes back?

In fact, for patients who have FSGS relapse on their transplanted kidney, if they accept kidney transplant for twice, their disease will almost have relapse again.

On the other hand, patients may not need worry too much on their relapsed FSGS, because FSGS is a disease which progress slowly, and it needs a long time for patients to have severe kidney damage. In fact, most patients will need a long time to lose their kidney function, and patient’s kidney function is more likely to be damaged due to factors like proteinuria, hypertension or infection, etc.

Thereby, whether patients with relapsed FSGS on their transplanted kidney should accept second kidney transplant depends on patients’ own conditions. If their overall conditions are still well, accepting second kidney transplant may still be a better choice, but generally it has little chance for patients to have well overall health condition.
