Avoid Strenuous Exercise with IgA NephropathyBeing physically active helps keep IgA Nephropathy patient's body strong and better prepared to handle stress and kidney ailment. All people with IgA Kidney Disease, both early and late, are recommended to follow a proper fitness program and avoid strenuous exercise.

Strenuous or high-impact physical activity can worsen the symptoms of IgA Nephropathy such as protein and/or blood in urine, high creatinine level, edema, etc. Heavy contact sports that might cause injury to the kidney are also suggested to be avoided.

Then, what type of exercise is right for IgA Nephropathy patients?

Proper choices may include three parts:

1. Aerobic workout: walking, biking, golf, jogging, or running, swimming.

Generally, this form of activity should be done 3-5 times per week. People who are just beginning can do a little every day until it becomes second nature. Duration can range from 20 to 60 minutes.

2. Resistance training: use a lighter weight, as heavy one can increase the blood pressure to levels unsafe for IgA Nephropathy. Do this training 2-3 times a week.

3. Flexibility and stretching: yoga, Tai Chi, qi gong, etc. Stretch at each work out, usually 5-10 minutes.

Precautions

Be sure to exercise at a pace that is comfortable. Back off, and slow down once you feel uncomfortable. Signs of discomfort including difficulty breathing, sudden headache, tingling or numbness, fatigue, chest pain, etc.
