Cramps in Toes and Restless Legs for ESRD Patients

Cramps in Toes and Restless Legs for ESRD Patients Both cramps in toes and restless legs in severe cases can affect patients' walking ability, and they are common in end stage renal disease (ESRD). Thereby, patients should take some methods to manage their discomforts.

Kidney function

Kidneys are in charge of filtering blood, eliminating waste and toxins, maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, regulating blood pressure, and so on. In end stage kidney disease, nearly all of kidney function has been lost, so a series of discomforts and problems present.

With the loss of kidney function, several conditions can induce cramps in toes and restless legs. They are:

1. Swelling: Fluid retention can affect the blood circulation all over the body especially the lower limbs. As extra fluid accumulates in the legs and feet, cramps in toes and legs are more likely to occur.

2. Poor blood circulation: As kidneys fail to produce enough EPO, the red blood count (RBC) declines and blood circulation is disturbed. Accordingly, less blood flows into feet and legs, so these problems happen.

3. Electrolyte disorder: With the decline of kidney function, extra phosphorus builds up in the blood and more calcium is pulled out of the body. Then, high phosphorus and low calcium levels in the blood trigger discomforts in toes and legs easily.

Based on the underlying reasons, the treatments should be able to deal with fluid retention, improve blood circulation and normalize electrolyte balance. If patients still have certain kidney function, they can try Traditional Chinese Medicine which has several thousands of years' history and is good at treating chronic disease including chronic kidney disease. As long as patients' inner body system becomes normal, patients can get rid of cramps in toes and restless legs successfully.
