Stage 5 Kidney Failure: Why I Always Feel Shortness of Breath

Stage 5 Kidney Failure: Why I Always Feel Shortness of BreathAn individual with Stage 5 Kidney Failure has a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 15 ml/min or less. At this advanced stage of kidney disease, patients often suffer from shortness of breath. In order to eliminate this problem, it is necessary to make the actual cause of this condition clear.

What causes shortness of breath in Stage 5 Kidney Failure?

▪ Anemia. Healthy kidneys produce a hormone, EPO, which stimulate the bone marrow to make red blood cells needed to carry oxygen all over the body. In Stage 5 Kidney Failure, the kidneys have lost nearly all their ability to do their job effectively. There is shortage of red blood cells which carry oxygen, the body will be left starved, resulting in breathing problem.

▪ Pleural effusion. The kidneys' inability to get rid of excessive fluids may lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs in the cavity of the chest, thereby causing shortness of breath.

▪ Certain emotional conditions such as anxiety and panic attacks can also result in acute breathing problem.

▪ It may be one of the side effects of certain medicine which does not agree with the physiology of the body.

▪ Heart diseases, which result from inadequate blood supply to the cardiac muscles, can lead to chronic dyspnea.

▪ Long-standing narrowed arteries and elevated blood pressure reduce the blood pumping capacity of the heart. Since different body parts get deprived of sufficient amount of blood, and hence, oxygen, people may develop dyspnea.
