Is Seafood Diet Ok for Polycystic Kidney Disease

Is Seafood Diet Ok for Polycystic Kidney DiseasePolycystic Kidney Disease, or PKD, refers to a condition that fluid-filled cysts invade the kidneys. These cysts wreak havoc on the kidneys, which effect the rest of the body. Common symptoms of this disorder include pain especially in the lower abdomen or back, blood during urination, etc. A healthy diet can help slow down the progression of kidney damage and guard against potential complications. Is seafood diet Ok for PKD patients?

Actually, seafoods should be limited for people with PKD, as they are a rich source of protein. In generally, low protein diet is suggested in case of polycystic kidneys. Here is the reason:

When protein is metabolized by the liver, it leaves a waste product called urea. Normally, urea is expelled by kidneys, in PKD, the kidney function is damaged and urea starts building up which is harmful to the body. A low protein diet will put less strain on the diseased kidneys.

People with PKD often traditionally take proteins (in grams) proportional to their weight in kg. For example, an individual weighing 50 kg has to restrict his protein intake to 50g. Foods like seafood, egg, milk, cheese, meat, etc are suggested to be limited.

Besides, people with PKD are suggested to eating foods rich in fibers which fights against insulin resistance. Increase of insulin may enhance the progression of polycystic kidney. So eat high fiber foods including vegetables, fruits, grains, etc. Also avoid coffer, tea, colas, and chocolates, etc that contain caffeine. Alcohol should be avoided.
