Sunflower seeds is common snack for many people. However, it is not always a good choice, especially when your kidneys are diseases.
Kidneys are important organs to remove the toxins, excessive fluids and extra electrolytes, such as sodium and phosphorus. When kidneys are diseases, the waste products, excessive electrolytes or fluids will build up in the body, causing various symptoms, such as swellings, electrolytes disorder etc.
Sunflower seeds are the gift of the beautiful sunflower that has rays of petals emanating from its bright yellow, see-studded center. The flower produces grayish-green or black seeds encased in tear-dropped shaped gray or black shells that oftentimes feature black and white stripes.
However, sunflower seed is not suggested for patients with Kidney Disease, because it is rich in sodium and phosphorus.
As mentioned above, kidney disease may cause swellings. Water intake and sodium consumption are two major factors to worsen the swellings. As sunflower seed is rich in salt, thereby, it may aggravate the symptoms of Kidney Disease.
Other snacks that high in sodium include: Crackers, Potato chips, Corn chips, Pretzels, Tortilla chips, Nuts, Popcorn etc.
When kidneys are diseased, they will fail to remove the excessive phosphorus from the blood, causing hyperkalemia. To reduce the risk of this problem, people with kidney disease are not suggested to take foods rich in phosphorus.
Besides sunflower seeds, other foods that are in phosphorus include:
Wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, Bran, Squash seeds, Watermelon Seeds, Cheese, Sesame Seeds, Tahini, Nuts (Brazil and Pine), Flax Seeds, Roasted Soybeans (Edamame), Bacon etc.
