Recommended Water Consumption For Patient With Kidney Disease

Recommended Water Consumption For Patient With Kidney DiseasePatient with kidney disease should has strict restrictions in his diet, among which water consumption is also an important aspect that should be considered. What water consumption should be recommended for patient with kidney disease?

In fact, there are some aspects of water consumption that should be considered by patient with kidney disease.

As usual

Patient with kidney disease may tend to think he should have restriction in his water intake. In fact, patient should not to have any restriction in his water consumption if he does not have obvious edema. In this condition, patient can take water when he feels thirst, but he cannot take it without limits. Besides, patient should not take water generously, and it is better for patient to take water slowly.

Restricting water intake

There are two types of patients need to have restriction in their water intake. One is patient who has obvious edema, and the other is patient who has severe oliguria.

For patient who have obvious edema, there is large amount of fluid retention in his body, so patient needs to reduce his water consumption to help relive his condition. For patient who has severe oliguria, his kidney function is damaged severely, so excess water consumption will be a burden to his body, which makes water restriction very necessary.

In these conditions, patient’s water consumption should be calculated according to his condition. Except for the fluid volume of drainage, throwing up or urine, much water is consumed by patient’s body cells and is excreted out through sweat, which is called endogenous water, and patient’s daily water consumption should include these two parts. The obvious fluid volume is easy to calculate, but the endogenous water should be calculated by 12ml/kg per day, or just be treated as 500ml.

In fact, patient should not restrict his water intake blindly, and before patient has oliguria, his kidney structure has been damaged severely several years ago. If patient restrict water intake at this point, it will aggravate patent’s kidney condition. Besides, for patient who has cardiovascular disease, he may also need to reduce his water consumption appropriately.
