Low Protein Diet for a Person with FSGSAs FSGS patients' kidney function diminishes, the dietary restrictions needed to compensate are increased. A diet low in protein is often recommended.

Why is a low protein diet necessary?

When protein is metabolized by the liver, urea is produced as a waste product. The kidneys are responsible to excrete urea. In FSGS, the kidneys are not functioning properly. A low protein diet will decrease the workload of the diseased kidneys.

Amount

Generally, people with Chronic Kidney Disease including FSGS should limit the daily intake to 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. However, protein intake will need to be increased if dialysis has started. You can consult our online doctor for exact amount in your condition.

Healthy food choices

When the protein intake is restricted, refer to nutritional food choices. Protein can come from both animal and plant sources. Chose leaner cuts of meat, opt for low-fat dairy products and include fish in the diet. This can not only optimize the intake of vitamins and minerals, but also help control other health complications including high blood pressure and heart disease.

When the phosphorus level goes above normal, it is necessary to reduce foods high in protein and phosphorus. These foods include milk, yogurt, cheese, dried beans and peas, nuts and seeds, peanut butter and some soy products, etc.
