What Causes Big Tummy for Dialysis Patients

What Causes Big Tummy for Dialysis PatientsSome dialysis patients do complain of big tummy, and they hope to take some therapies to manage this problem completely. What causes big tummy for patients on dialysis?

The most common cause is fluid retention in the abdomen. To make patients live comfortably, they should control their fluid intake tightly. If they drink too much fluid during dialysis session, extra fluid may accumulate in some regions such as ankles, feet, legs, face and abdomen. Big tummy occurs when too much fluid collects in the abdomen.

If patients have large kidney stones that can cause some complications and big tummy is just one of these complications, kidney stone is often accompanied by PKD, IgA Nephropathy, FSGS, and some other types of chronic kidney disease.

If kidney failure is due to Polycystic Kidney Disease, big tummy may be also caused by enlarged kidney cysts. In end stage PKD, kidneys are usually full of big kidney cysts that can take place of inherent kidney cells gradually.

Peritoneal infection may be another reason, when patients are taking peritoneal dialysis. Different from hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis uses peritoneum as dialysis membrane. As time goes on, peritoneal infection occurs easily.

The treatment to alleviate big tummy should depend on the underlying cause. To get individual treatment plan in detail, you can just email your illness description to Then, you can get the answer timely.

If the big tummy is due to fluid retention, patients should control their fluid and sodium intake tightly, and the key is to maintain their dry body weight. If PKD is the underlying cause, the treatment should be able to shrink kidney cysts and improve renal anoxia and ischemia condition. If peritoneal infection is the reason, they had better alter their dialysis type and take some antibiotics if necessary.
