Informations about Fistula Surgery for Dialysis Patients

Informations about Fistula Surgery for Dialysis PatientsThere are two types of dialysis: peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis. Before taking any type of dialysis, patients should do one fistula surgery in advance. Today, we are here to introduce some information about this surgery.

According to the form of dialysis patients select, they will be guided to do either PD catheter placement or vascular access operation. Thereby, we would like to introduce them separately.

Fistula surgery for hemodialysis

It usually needs about 3~6 months for the fistula from being created to being enough mature to use, so kidney failure patients had better make sure their fistula surgery is done well before beginning dialysis. According to patients' body structure, doctors may give patients an arteriovenous (AV) fistula or an AV graft.

AV fistula: Patients can do this fistula surgery if their veins are large enough. Because it is created from patients' artery and vein, it can be one part of their body and provide good blood flow between dialyzer and the body. To prevent swelling in fistula area, doctors may prescribe some medications to them.

AV graft: If patients' veins are too small or their veins are blocked, they will be suggested to do AV graft, which is one man-made tube. This graft can usually be used to begin dialysis within 2 to 6 weeks.

Peritoneal dialysis catheter replacement

Different from hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis uses peritoneum as dialyzer membrane. To replace a catheter in their abdomen, patients should examine them to determine whether they have any problem in their abdomen. If no, they can do this catheter replacement safely, and there are two common ways to place this catheter. They are laparoscopic and surgical.

These are some basic informations about fistula surgery for patients who are preparing for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. To learn more about them, you can contact the doctor online or leave a message below.
