Should Dialysis Patients Avoid Lactulose

Should Dialysis Patients Avoid LactuloseLactulose is one medication that can help treat constipation and hepatic coma. Constipation is one common complication of dialysis. Can dialysis patients use lactulose?

Dialysis

Dialysis is often used to replace damaged kidneys to cleanse the blood and regulate blood pressure. To achieve these goals, the dialysate exchanges nutritions with waste products in the blood. Since it is unable to be as effective as healthy kidneys, dialysis can cause a series of side effects and complications easily.

Lactulose for dialysis patients

Patients on dialysis also need to restrict their fluid intake and diet plan, so they are usually at a high risk of chronic constipation. In this case, patients may consider to use laxative, while lactulose is just one type of laxative. However, not all dialysis patients can use this medication, and if patients have one of the below problems, they should stay away from this drug.

- Galactosemia

- Intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal pain and used in conjunction with other agent of catharsis

- Being allergic to lactulose or its components

- Diabetes or high blood glucose

In some cases, glucose exists in the dialysate that may increase patients' blood sugar easily. Therefore, dialysis patients can't use lactulose freely.

If dialysis patients have chronic constipation, only depending on laxative may not work very well. If they want to overcome their this problem from the root, they also need to drink correct amount of fluid, eat more high-fiber foods, and normalize their electrolyte balance. If they still have chance, they are recommended to take some therapies to improve their kidney condition and overall health condition. Check with the doctor online to determine the detailed treatment plan to deal with chronic constipation.
