Information Helps Kidney Patients With Cramping After Dialysis

Information Helps Kidney Patients With Cramping After DialysisIs there any information that can help me with cramping after I am done with dialysis? Muscle cramps which can involve legs, hands and feet occur frequently in patients on dialysis. It is reported that about 33%~86% of dialysis patients have this symptom, so we invite nephrologists from Shijiazhuang Kidney Disease Hospital to introduce more about this symptom.

These nephrologists said muscle cramps may be so painful that patients can hardly move after dialysis. For these patients, there are several factors that can cause cramping directly.

Low blood pressure, one most common complication of dialysis, is also the leading cause of muscle cramps. If patients drink extra fluid during two dialysis treatments and too much fluid is drained out in one dialysis treatment, low blood pressure occurs easily. The onset of low blood pressure is often accompanied by cramps, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting and headache.

Low concentrations of sodium, increased ultrafiltration and low parathyroid hormone levels may also be the causes of muscle cramps.

After introducing the causes of cramping for dialysis patients, nephrologists give out the following treatment options to help alleviate this discomfort.

1. Control the fluid intake during dialysis sessions: According to patients’ illness condition, the doctor in dialysis center can determine patients’ dry weight and safe fluid gain during two dialysis sessions. Then, patients should follow their doctors’ requirements to take in fluid.

2. Adjust the dialysate and dialyzer timely: If patients have any discomfort during dialysis treatment, they should tell their doctor or nurse immediately to modify their renal replacement therapy into the best state.

3. Use massage or hot compression: Both of these two therapies can ease dialysis patients’ cramps effectively, but they should be done with the guidance of professional doctors.

In addition to these direct methods, doctors from Shijiazhuang Kidney Disease Hospital also recommend these kidney patients to improve their kidney function and overall health condition through effective treatments, if they have chance.
