Fluid Loads A Lot for Dialysis Patients

Fluid Loads A Lot for Dialysis PatientsDialysis, either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, is needed when both kidneys fail to work. In end stage kidney failure, extra fluid will retain in the body and dialysis usually can remove extra fluid. From this point, it is abnormal that fluid loads a lot for dialysis patients. What causes this abnormal phenomenon?

The most common cause is that kidney failure patients drink too much fluid during dialysis sessions. Dialysis does help diseased kidneys to filter out extra fluid through dialysis machine, but there is a limit on the amount of fluid that can be removed safely during one dialysis treatment. If patients go over their recommended fluid allowance, fluid will load a lot that makes the heart work harder, too much fluid build up in the lungs or blood pressure increase. All of these problems may become quite dangerous if uncontrolled effectively.

Another cause is inadequate dialysis treatment. If dialysis is performed incorrectly, excessive amount of fluid will load in the body and cause a series of problems and discomforts.

To prevent or manage loaded fluid for dialysis patients, the following managements are needed.

1. Limit fluid intake

The goal of fluid intake for dialysis patients is to help these patients feel comfortable. According to patients’ illness condition, doctors can guide patients to drink correct amount of fluid.

2. Make dialysis work adequately

If you are undergoing dialysis and have some discomforts, you should tell doctors or nurses in dialysis center immediately. Therefore, they can help regulate your dialysis treatment correctly.

3. Save your kidneys if you still have remaining kidney function

If you still have urine, you may have chance to reduce the frequency of dialysis or even stop it. Immunotherapy, Clear Blood Pollution Therapy and Stem Cell Therapy are three treatments used commonly to treat kidney failure.
