Is It Normal to Get A Fever after Dialysis Treatment

Is It Normal to Get A Fever after Dialysis TreatmentCompared with other kidney patients, dialysis patients are especially susceptible to getting fever. However, it doesn’t mean it is normal to get a fever after dialysis treatment. On the contrary, the underlying cause of fever may be life-threatening. Therefore, patients undergoing dialysis should manage their fever timely.

Bacterial infection is the most common cause of fever for dialysis patients, but it isn’t the only cause. Correct treatments should be taken based on the underlying cause. (To find out what causes your fever, you can consult the doctor online directly.)

The first cause: Infections of the bronchopulmonary system, at the dialysis access site and urinary tract are the most common cause of fever after dialysis treatment.

Management: Firstly, it is vital to use aseptic technique and avoid doing to public place for preventing infections. Secondly, in severe cases, patients should take antibiotics to control their infections immediately. Finally, improving their immunity system is also one good method to fight against infections.

The second cause: Malfunctioning thermostat or cold dialyzate can also cause fever in some cases.

Management: You don’t need to worry a lot if your fever and chills are due to this reason. Tell your doctors or nurses in dialysis center immediately, so they are able to help modify the temperature of your dialyzate or altering the thermostat for prime time.

The third cause: Peritonitis is the common cause of fever for patients on peritoneal dialysis, because peritoneal dialysis uses patients’ peritoneum as the dialysis membrane. The longer patients on peritoneal dialysis, the more risk of peritonitis they have.

Management: Non-surgical treatment and surgery are two treatments option to deal with peritonitis. The individual treatment suggestion should depend on the severity of peritonitis.

The last cause: Pyrogenic reaction is another cause of fever for dialysis patients which is due to presence of dead bacteria endotoxins.

Management: As soon as you are found that your fever is attributed to pyrogenic reaction, you should be removed from dialysis immediately and gathered samples of dialyzate and blood per company policy.
