Walnuts for Gout Patients on Dialysis

Walnuts for Gout Patients on DialysisDialysis is commonly used to help diseased kidneys to eliminate waste products, extra fluid and toxins. Gout is one result of high uric acid level. If dialysis patients also have gout, walnuts may be the food that these patients need to limit.

As the above mentioned, gout is resulted from the deposits of uric acid in the blood, while purine is the source of uric acid. Therefore, patients with gout should avoid high-purine foods such as animal giblets and seafoods. Fortunately, walnut is one food low in purine. From this point, dialysis patients can still eat correct amount of walnut.

However, purine shouldn’t be the only substance that dialysis patients with gout concern. Besides, potassium and phosphorus may be two minerals that dialysis patients should limit. When kidney patients are suggested to begin dialysis, it means their kidney function level has declined seriously. Therefore, kidneys are unable to eliminate extra potassium and phosphorus efficiently.

If patients are doing hemodialysis, they need to develop a low-potassium and low-phosphorus diet plan. However, walnut is rich in both of these two minerals, so hemodialysis patients are recommended to control their intake of nuts including walnuts, peanut, almond, and so on.

If patients are on peritoneal dialysis, they don’t need to worry about the intake potassium, because extra potassium can be discharged out fully. In this case, they can increase the intake amount of walnut to some extent.

Now, we can know the factors that determine whether gout patients on dialysis can eat walnuts. If you just have a similar experience, you are suggested to determine how much walnut or other nuts you can consume one day with online doctor’s guidance. This is because a healthy diet can make dialysis patients avoid some complications and live easier.
