Dialysis is one conventional kidney treatment, and many factors determine the adequate degree and smooth process of dialysis, such as the concentration and temperature of dialysate. If dialysis treatment isn’t adequate, a series of problems and complications will appear. Cramps are just one common complications, and the following conditions can lead to it.

1. Too much fluids are taken out quickly

Patients’ muscles are more likely to react by cramping to fluid taken out at a fast rate during dialysis or too much fluid is eliminated. In this case, patients should tell their nurse and doctor as soon as they have this problem.

2. Low calcium level

When kidneys are unable to excrete extra phosphorus, more and more phosphorus will build up in the blood that pull calcium out of the bone. Finally, calcium level becomes lower than the normal. Besides, vitamin D deficiency can also cause low calcium level. Low calcium level is one direct cause of muscle cramps.

3. Cold dialyzate

If the temperature of dialyzate is low, it may induce cramps easily. From this point, we can know controlling the temperature of dialyzate correctly is very important to avoid cramps.

4. Poor blood circulation

After the blood is filtered out by kidneys, 20%~25% of blood will flow back to kidneys again. Once blood is polluted because of impaired kidneys, less blood can flow throughout the body. Then, poor blood circulation into legs, arms or other regions can lead to cramps easily.
